Last Friday we saw Assassination Nation. We went in without too much expectation other than we knew it was going to be extra. And it was 500% extra, so we were not surprised there. What did surprise us, or at least Wil, was how much he liked it. Loved it, even. It took a lot of things he likes; strong female characters, loud music, loads of colors, and it mashed them all together. And pretty successfully at that.
It is however a full blown assault on your senses. It’s flashy, it’s bright and dark all at once, it’s loud, and incredibly in your face. It whacks you with its commentary about social media, rape culture, women’s rights, mob mentality, etc. The list goes on and on. It even hits you with a full minute of trigger warnings at the beginning. It’s unapologetic, mostly in a good way. But maybe it goes too far sometimes, and maybe it reinforces the bad behavior it’s skewering. Kristin has some thoughts about that.
There’s no way that we’d recommend Assassination Nation to everyone. It’s just a lot to take in in what will feel like a very fast two hours. It’s a challenging movie, but maybe not in all the right ways. But at least some of the right ways. If you’re on the fence, come hang out for this episode of So…I’m Watching This Show. By the time we’re done, you’ll know if it’s for you, or if it isn’t. But again, Wil totally loved it.
