We adore Bram Stoker’s Dracula. But don’t be confused by our proclamation of love, followed by many minutes explaining how boring it is. We love it, we swear! There’s just some things we don’t love, mainly the casting. We also do truly love Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder, but they are out of place here. Not only in the setting, but at this stage in their careers, they were wholly outclassed by Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins. It’s no fault of their own, they did what they could.
Outside of that though, we’re very into this movie. We both saw it in our formative years and despite initial feelings of boredom, we both came out enjoying it. And damn, those costumes! Really everything about the production itself is so stellar. Costumes, sets, make up, etc. Everyone here really did something special, in particular director Francis Ford Coppola, who turned down many offers/attempts by special effects supervisors to take everything CG. The practical aesthetic is really the shining star of the movie.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula is a classic. It does a great job of keeping the ideals of the original story while bringing it to a modern audience. There’s a lot to like about this movie, and to hear all about it, tune into today’s episode of So…I’m Watching This Show!
