Britney Spears is the reason for the season, you might say. She burst onto the scene in the late 90s and changed the pop music landscape forever. Love her or hate her, that is a fact. She broke the dam for the flood of pop princesses that would soon take over.
We spend about half of this podcast going through her many ups and downs both musically and personally. In general terms, she walked so everyone else could run. She took the brunt of the criticism around that type of bubblegum pop because she was the face. She was too slutty, not slutty enough, too fake yada yada yada or whatever the media wanted to say about her. But she kept making her music.
And you know we can’t talk about Britney without talking about Crossroads. As promised on our Burlesque episode, we brought back Josh from @RockMoviesPod to talk about it! He’s a long time Britney stan (aren’t we all) and relishes any opportunity to wax poetic about her. Crossroads is a strange animal. Born in Britney’s mind and realized through Shonda Rhimes’ hands, it’s a lot better than we remember. We don’t want to give everything away, but suffice it to say we have a lot to say about the gender and sexual politics of the early 90s.
We had a great time hanging out with Josh and reminiscing about one of our all-time favorite pop queens. Tune in for a music-filled episode of So…I’m Watching This Show!
