If you’re not familiar with Terry Gilliam, well you probably are but don’t realize it. He directed the comedy classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail. If you haven’t seen yet I don’t really know how to help you. He made that early in his career in 1975, before he embarked on what is regarded as his “trilogy” in the 80s. That series of movies, while not relative narratively, are so tied together stylistically that it’s hard to not consider them siblings; Beginning with Time Bandits in 1981, followed up by Brazil in 1985, and then ending in todays topic, the Adventures of Baron Munchausen in 1988.
Baron Munchausen was riddled with problems from the start, the largest being the finances. It was something they just couldn’t get where they wanted. Lo and behold they wound up DOUBLING their initial budget. A slew of other issues arose while filming, but you won’t find much of that on screen. The movie winds up being weird but ultimately cohesive in a way that makes anything strange such as unfinished sets feel purposeful.
