As the time for Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman’s Hellboy 3 waned, we started to wonder what they’d do with a relatively good comic franchise going forward. The foundation was there, set before the Avengers came into play, so why not use that to their advantage? Unfortunately, the studio went with a full reboot. Not inherently bad, but not a sequel.
The one saving grace early was the casting of David Harbour, Stranger Things beloved Chief Hopper. So hopes went up, rightly so, and they earned some good will. Then the first trailer dropped, and so did our hearts. Effects looked unfinished. Dialogue seemed super “edgy”. And then there’s the Milla Jovovich of it all, bringing that Resident Evil feel to something that should be better…
So spoiler alert, this movie was a total turkey. Top to bottom trash, with the exception of the titular Hellboy. Harbour did what he could, but there was no saving this. It had one or two moments where you’d forget how bad this thing you’re looking at really is, but then it’d remind you.
