Look, we love super heroes. Of course Marvel is crushing it with the MCU, and DC is even getting some wins under their tool belt. But even without the fatigue of an over saturated market, it’s still nice to see fresh takes on a genre. And that’s exactly what Amazon’s The Boys delivered to us.
The comic world has no shortage of off-kilter, genre redefining titles. The problem is that it’s a risk to put any of them on the air in an MCU/DC dominated world. Fortunately for us, Amazon has taken that risk and delivered to us a comic adaption that takes a completely different approach to super heroes. The story is familiar but different, the tone is fresh, and it ramps the violence up to 11. Comically violent, to use a double meaning.
The Boys succeeds on so many fronts. The characters it delivers to us are fresh and unique, but also layered. And I don’t just mean the main characters. Everyone is given enough material so that you as a viewer feel like you know them and their motivations. It’s a balancing act few shows pull off.
We heartily recommend The Boys, but it certainly won’t be for everyone. If you like the gentle commentary of the MCU, you may want to skip this harsher take on the super hero sub-genre. But if you’re looking to expand your horizons, this show totally nails it. Hang out with us as we go on an extended deep dive of The Boys on today’s episode of So…I’m Watching This Show!
