Suspiria is a bit of a weird one. The original 1979 film by Dario Argento is the perfect candidate for a remake. It’s very ‘of its time’ and on a technical level didn’t age all that well. So naturally we were at least a little excited to hear it was getting redone by Luca Guadagnino. We loved Call Me by Your Name and were interested to see what he was going to do with the horror genre.

This is where things get tricky. The first trailer came out and was NOT what we were looking for. The original is nothing if not a veritable orgy of color. From the set design to the lighting it is COLORFUL. But Suspiria 2018 didn’t look to have any of that. It looked like it was going to be a bunch of grey with some pops of red. And that’s what it wound up being. Not only that, but the style in which it was filmed was very old school. It felt like a lot of 70s sensibilities were used to craft the shots. So it felt old and new at the same time. Unfortunately we greatly prefer the glossiness of the IT movies for example. They are prettier, and we’re for it. Less gloom and doom and more glamor.

However, husband/editor Will loves Suspiria. So we had him come on the show to explain to us what that’s like. He also has patiently waited over a year to get us to watch it so it only makes sense to have him on as a guest.

There’s no arguing despite our differing opinions. Just some chat about the things we liked, the things we didn’t, and the hopes we had for it. So settle in for an unsettling chat about Suspiria on today’s episode of So…I’m Watching This Show!
