Today we’re talking about a few things, but let’s address the elephant in the room; VIDEO! You may be aware that we’ve been making efforts to get video for our podcast going for a few months. Well, we’re getting close! For today’s episode we did record video so we could test the space and so husband/editor Will has a chance to get a workflow squared away. You probably won’t see this video, but you’ll notice the quality of the audio is a bit different. We’re still working out the quirks so bear with us!
That said, today we start off talking about the Personal History of David Copperfield! It’s a Dickens adaptation about, as Kristin puts it, “a man who has many troubles but wins in the end.” Dickens isn’t known for his dark endings. It was directed by Armando Iannucci and boy does it feel like it. Not only does it have his signature flare like you find in Veep or In the Thick of It, but it seems like he’s also channeling the whimsy of Terry Gilliam! We loved it, but our only criticism would be that we wanted MORE of that whimsy.
Our transition topic today is the MTV VMAs. Generally we like to watch so we can be in the loop and to see some great performances. This year was no different. Keke Palmer hosted and the performances were great. Not much more to say about that.
Our next big focus is on Katy Perry’s new album, Smile. We both tend to agree this is a bit of a darker Katy and we like it. Katy is someone we like hearing from even though in general she’s not our favorite artist. We love her as a human though and even included a clip today of her getting real about the social media life of not only her but so many other female stars dealing with online bullying daily. Aside from that though, we really do like this album and you’ll hear our faves in the episode.
We close out by checking out the Haunting of Bly Manor trailer! It is spooky AF. Too many dolls, I’m telling you right now there are too many dolls. We absolutely loved Haunting of Hill House and we couldn’t be more excited for Bly Manor.
So it’s a pretty packed episode! We hope you’ll take this journey through pop culture with us on today’s episode of So…I’m Watching This Show!
