Barb and Star go to Vista del Mar was one of the many movies displaced by COVID last year. It was originally supposed to hit in July and was delayed until later this year. However, recently it was decided to just put the damn thing out, a strategy we wish more of these finished and delayed movies would employ. I get the reasoning, but it’s a bummer waiting an extra year to see Bond or Dune. But Barb and Star found its way to us and boy was it weird.
This movie follows two middle-aged best friends going on their first vacation together after they lose their jobs, the most life altering thing to ever happen to them. You may expect this movie to be up the alley of Bridesmaids as it is Krisen Wiig and Annie Mumolo writing. You’d be WAY wrong though. Barb and Star plays a lot more like one of Wiig’s zanier SNL characters developed into a feature. It’s weird. Like WEIRD. It’s essentially an Austin Powers film except instead of international men of mystery, Barb and Star are very regional women with their hearts on their sleeves. And we sort of loved it.
Wil struggled to find his footing with Barb and Star. And we’re not THAT surprised, it’s very odd. But it watches a lot like Arrested Developed; better on repeat viewings. After almost three watches Wil caught up to Kristin and they both really enjoyed it and are eager for it to grow. It’s bound to be a cult classic and it’s super quotable so expect the phrase ‘tit flapper’ to start working its way into the zeitgeist.
