After many years of drinking the Pixar Kool-Aid, we now find ourselves more than willing to criticize them. Since Toy Story 3 in 2010, maybe five of the 13 movies they have released have hit with us. Not that they’re putting out trash, but their success rate is for sure down compared to their first 15 year run. After Onward and Soul underwhelmed us last year (again, we liked them, but we didn’t like them the same way we like Up or Wall-E) we were hoping Luca would be a return to form. Sadly, it was another “miss”.
Kristin did wind up liking it quite a bit. Outside of the valid criticism, she still found it to be super cute, pretty, and good fun. Wil mostly had the same feelings, but the criticism weighed him down more. Luca opens as a movie about friendship and self-discovery, then turns into a movie about a bicycle race. Plus, why doesn’t Luca and Alberto’s journey of self-discovery include them realizing they’re in love? It’s set up so similarly to Call Me By Your Name. They’re very physical, Luca is clearly enamored of Alberto, why can’t they just kiss at the end? We’re still waiting for Disney to commit to an LGBTQIA+ story, instead of just having a non-human cop mention her wife in passing (Onward). It was just disappointing…
So what did you think of Luca? Were the vibrant colors and fun artstyle enough for you? Or do you have the same disappointment we had? Let us know over on Twitter or in the Youtube comments! For now though, hop on your Vespa, grab a bowl of boring noodles and settle in for today’s episode of So…I’m Watching this Show!
