The Green Knight was not what we expected. Not that that’s bad, but they sold it like a big fantasy epic and it plays a lot slower than that. Though maybe we should have expected that from director David Lowery, whose credits include a one-take of Rooney Mara eating a pie for over 8 minutes. So this movie was a lot and all over, and in this episode we work through our many and varied feelings.
As you should know, The Green Knight is a medieval folk tale, adjacent to the Arthurian mythos. It is a story about bravery and honor, and living up to one’s potential. But it’s very nebulous and super open to interpretation. And boy has it been interpreted over the 700 or so years it has existed. So why not add our own into the mix! We didn’t do much digging before we had our talk so it really is mostly our takes. As it should be. Films like this are meant to be thought about, so come to your own conclusion before reading others’.
So what did you think of The Green Knight? Is it the first masterpiece of 2021? Or is it boring, pretentious, the worst movie you’ve ever seen? Let us know over on Twitter or in the YouTube comments! We know this one can be kind of divisive, so keep it civil. All opinions are welcome! For now though, strap in for today’s extremely esoteric episode of So…I’m Watching This Show!
