It’s that time of year again! Most people love the holiday season, but not everyone is here for all the holiday SCHLOCK that gets crapped out on the big or little screens. Hallmark wears the crown, but they aren’t the only game in town. In the last few years the streaming services have gotten in the business. In particular Hulu last year put out Happiest Season, and Netflix this year gave us today’s film, Single All the Way.
While we aren’t the ones watching Hallmark, we’re generally willing to give a Christmas movie a shot if it looks good and Single All the Way met that single criteria. It’s also about a gay couple, and their gayness didn’t really play into it. Something like Happiest Season was much more fraught because the lead’s family didn’t know she was gay. In this though, they all know, they just want our hero to be in a good relationship with his friend.
Both films share some commonality though. That they exist is the most important part. They’re both good, but not perfect, and sometimes even mediocre. But as far as representation goes, that matters. Not every “gay” movie needs to be Portrait of a Lady on Fire Oscar bait. They can just be movies for everyone like so many “hetero” movies are. That said, we really did enjoy Single All the Way and we’ll be happy to add it to the rotation when the season comes around again.
What did you think of Single All the Way? Is it going to be a new holiday must-watch for you, or is it going in the Hallmark bin? Let us know over on Twitter or in the Youtube comments!
