We’ve been pretty big fans of Alex Garland’s for a while now. First as Dany Boyle’s frequent script writer, then as a director. Ex Machina quickly became one of our favorite sci-fi flicks and then Annihilation kind of just blew us away. So there was no reason for us not to be excited about MEN.

Unfortunately Men doesn’t quite stick the landing. It marketed itself as some commentary on the nature of Men™ but it really didn’t hit that point very well, and didn’t really expand on that idea. And man, that ending. I mean what the heck…

That’s not to say that Men is completely without merit. It’s a stunning looking film with killer, unsettling cinematography. That unsettling look is matched and exceeded by Rory Kinnear’s completely unhinged performance as all of the men in the town. And Jessie Buckley never disappoints. For the first two acts, all four of us were kind of on the edge of our seats waiting for the explanation or the twist or anything. But it never came and the ending we got sort of retroactively ruined the movie for us.
